Q

elixir végétal

A

The Carthusian Monks in the Chartreuse mountains in France have been making this very potent tincture of 130 herbs since 1764; it’s incredibly herbaceous, and very high proof, so a little goes a long way. In the Tuxedo No. 9, the guest smells it more than tastes it, as it’s sprayed on the inside of the glass before the cocktail is poured in.

Manzanilla sherry is a fortified wine from Andalucia, Spain that has two unique aging processes. Manzanilla comes from a small coastal town called Sanlucar de Barrameda, which is apparent in the wine; it tastes a lot like salty sea air.

Q

cocchi americano

A

Cocchi Americano is akin to vermouth in that it is an aromatized and fortified wine. The word “americano” here refers to the Italian word for “bitter,” and it is more pointedly bitter than vermouth is. It is also more citrus forward than vermouth tends to be.
