Coasts - What affects the rate of coastal erosion? Flashcards
1
Q
Outline 4 factors which affect the rate of coastal erosion.
A
Geology
Resistance of Rock
More resistant rock such as granite will erode more slowly than soft, less resistant rock such as chalk.
Rock’s Structure
Rocks with lots of cracks and faults will erode faster than those without
Strength of Wave
Length of Fetch
Waves which have travelled over larger distances of water will erode faster than those with shorter distances because they have been getting energy from the wind for a greater distance.
Wind Speed
The stronger the wind, the more energy it gives to the waves. The more powerful the waves, faster the rate of erosion.
