Q

How is a named area of coast being managed?

A

Walton on the Naze

Walton on the Naze is a coastal town in Essex which is being eroded very quickly due to it’s rock type - Red Crag and London Clay.

A strategy of managed retreat where the land is being allowed to flood has been adopted to the north of the area. This is because there is only one grade 2 listed tower here and a few houses on Old Hall Lane so it is not a priority for protection.

The southern area of the town is well protected because it is the main area of the town and has a population of 12000 people. A large project in 1977 was completed to protect the town. This included the building of a seawall to deflect the wave energy away from the coast and back into the sea to protect the easily eroded London Clay. Groynes were also installed as they help limit longshore drift and keep the beach in place. The beach acts as a good natural defence against coastal erosion as it dissipates wave energy before it reaches the cliff. The cliff has also been regraded to try and protect against slumping. Much of this was done to protect expensive properties on the cliff at Sunny Point Road.
