Definition of elements in coasts?
Things that make up the system
What are attributes within coasts?
The perceived characteristics
What is a system in terms of coasts?
An assemblage of interrupted coasts
What is an isolated system?
No inputs or outputs of energy or matter. No interactions with anything outside the boundary
What is a closed system?
Transfers of energy but not matter
What is an open system?
Inputs and outputs of both energy and matter
What is positive feedback?
Where changes within a system are amplified
What is negative feedback?
Where changes within the system slow down or stop further changes
What is the small scale within a coastal system?
A beach system
What is on a large scale within a coastal system?
Sediment (littoral) cells
- bounded by headlands
What is a landform?
A specific geomorphic feature on the surface of the Earth. Ranging from large scale features such as plains, plateaus and mountains and minor features such as hills
What is a landscape?
A landscape that is part of the Earths surface, that can be viewed at one time at one place. Consists of geographical features / landforms that are characterised by a particular area
What are some depositional landforms?

- bay / beach
What are some erosional landforms?
- blowhole
- stack
- arch
- cave
