coastal processes - salt crystillisation etc Flashcards
what is frost shattering?
promoted by the presence of large amounts of water
salt water freezes
rocks become severely cracked by process
what is salt crystallization?
salt water evaporates and forms salt crystals
as the crystals grow they exert pressure in the rock causing them to break away
what is wetting and drying?
rocks expand and contract
this results in formation of cracks and which weakens the rock
what is solution?
involves the dissolving of soluble minerals
enlarges joints and rocks
creating pitted and jagged rock surfaces
what is chemical weathering?
tends to occur where there is alternate wetting and drying and/or towards the bottom of the slopes where material and moisture often accumulate
