6
Q

How does heparin work?

A

*Anticoagulant8

-Inhibits intrinsic and final common pathway

-Binds to Antithrombin, greatly accelerating its anticoagulant ability 1,000 fold

-Heparin/antithrombin complex neutralizes thrombin (II) and activated factors IX, X, XI, and XII

-Also inhibits platelet function (secondary antiplatelet function)

Factor IIa and Xa antagonist
-Indirect (antithrombin cofactor)
