Co-ordination and control (5) Flashcards
What is a stimulus
A change in the environment, each stimulus produces a specific response
What are the 3 major parts of the nervous system
-Brain
-Spinal cord
-Nerves
What are the 6 major parts of the hormonal system
Pituitary gland
Thymus gland
Thyroid gland
Adrenal gland
Pancreas
Kidneys
Reproductive organs
What is the nature of response in the nervous system
It send electrical impulses along neurons (nerve cells)
What is the nature of response in the hormonal system
Releases hormones from glands into the blood
What is the speed of response in the nervous system
Fast
What is the speed of response in the hormonal system
Slow (sometimes even years)
What is the role of the nervous system from the stimulus to the response.
SRCER
Stimulus -> receptor cells -> Co-ordinated by nervous system -> Effector (muscles) -> Response
What two things are the nervous system divided into?
the central nervous system (CNS) - brain and spinal cord
the peripheral nervous system - nerves that connect the rest the body to the CNS
What do sensory neurones do
carry sensory impulses from receptors to CNS = skin -> brain
what do motor neurones do
carry motor impulses to effectors such as muscles
what do the association (connector) neurones do
connect sensory and motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord
what is the CNS
the brain and spinal cord
