Co Ordination Flashcards
Caphalopod
Organisms with a brain unlike jellyfish
Stimulus
A detectable alteration in the internal or external environment an organism that produces some change in the organism
Receptor
Cells or organs that can detect change in internal or external environment.they convert energy from stimulus into some form of energy that can be processed by the organism
Transducer
Organisms covert energy, the process is known as transduction
Co ordinator
This connects information from the receptor to the appropriate effector
Effector
An organ that responds to stimulation by a nerve impulse resulting in a change or response
Response
The action that an organism takes to a stimulus
Taxis
Is a simple response whose direction is determined but the direction of the stimulus
Positive direction
Moving towards something e.g food
Negative taxis
Moving away from something e.g a hot source
Kinesis
Is a form of response in which the organism does not move towards or away from a stimulus . Instead the more unpleasant the stimulus the more rapidly it moves and more rapidly it changes direction
Reflex
A rapid transport to a stimulus without conscious control
The reflex arc
Stimulus, receptor, sensory, relay, motor, effector, response
Advantages to the reflex
Helps organisms avoid damage, it’s very fast you don’t need to think about it, doesn’t need to be learnt-protects infants
Pacinian corpuscle
Receptor the detects pressure, touch and vibrations in the skin
Describe the pacinian corpuscle when it is stimulated
Pressure cause the lamellae to stretch and deform, stretch mediated sodium ions open, Na+, depolarisation of the neurone is called greater potential, if threshold is reached then and action potential is inhibited
Histamine
Triggers vasodilation and increases vascular permeability.stored in granules of circulating white blood cells
Prostaglandin
Hormone like substance that have a variety of strong physiological effects such as regulating the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle tissue
Tropisms
In plants- growth movement of a plant in response to a directional stimulus. The plant will either grow towards or away from the stimulus
Auxins
Hormones released to grow, compounds are generally considered auxins if they induce cell elongation in stem
Geotropism
Roots are positively geotropic stems are negatively geotrpic
