CNS & PNS Flashcards
Comprises the brain and spinal cord. Integrates sensory information. Coordinates voluntary and involuntary responses. Responsible for higher functions such as thought, memory, and emotion. Processes and interprets signals from the peripheral nervous system.
CNS
Consists of all the nerves and ganglia outside the CNS, including sensory and motor neurons. Controls voluntary movements by innervating skeletal muscles and transmits sensory information from the body to the CNS. Regulates involuntary functions (e.g., heart rate, digestion) and is further divided into: Prepares the body for “fight or flight” responses. Parasympathetic Division: Promotes “rest and digest” functions.
PNS
The central organ of the nervous system that coordinates sensory information, controls motor functions, and is responsible for cognition, emotions, and behavior.
