Strept. Pneumonia

Tx of bacterial meningitis
General:3rd generation cephalosporin;
If meningococcal: Penicillin G
Tx of contacts for bacterial meningitis
Single does ciprofloxacin or rifampicin for the contacts
Tx of brain abscess
Medical: empirical 3rd gen cephalosporin +
Metronidazole
Surgical: excision
M/c organism causing viral Encephalitis
HSV
Tx of viral Encephalitis
Antipyretics
Acyclovir or gancyclovir for 2 weeks
Antiepileptic drug
M/c causative organism in acute septic meningitis in children
E. Coli and GBS
M/C causative organism in acute septic meningitis in young adults
Neiserria meningitides
M/C causative organism in chronic meningitis
Mycobacteria TB
M/c causative organism causing acute septic meningitis in older adults
Strpt. Pneumonia
M/C causative organism causing acute aseptic meningitis
Influenza, enterovirus, measles
CSF findings:
Color: clear
Cells: normal- 1000
WBC: lymphocytes
CSF plasma glucose ratio: normal
Proteins: normal
What is the diagnosis?
Viral meningitis
CSF findings
Color: turbid
Cells: >1000
WBC : neutrophils
Glucose: low
Proteins : >1 g/L
Bacterial meningitis
CSF findings
Color : normal/turbid
Cells up to 1000
WBC: lymphocytes
Glucose normal/low
Proteins: up to 5
Diagnosis?
Fungal meningitis
CSF findings
Color :clear/turbid slightly
Cells: increased
WBC: lymphocytes
Glucose :low
Proteins:normal or high
