CNS Imaging Flashcards
What ‘5th lobe’ of the brain is located in the Sylvian (lateral) fissure?
the insula
What fissure separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe?
the sylvian fissure aka the lateral fissure
What brain structure makes up the walls of the third ventricles?
the thalamus
What is another name for the cerebral aqueduct?
the aqueduct of sylvius
What ‘C’ structure sits up into the crescent shape of the anterior horn of the lateral ventricles?
the caudate nucleus
Do the lentiform nucleus and the globus pallidus & putamen sit medial or lateral to the thalamus and 3rd ventricle?
Lateral
At what vertebral level does the cord officially end?
T12 - L1
Is regular anemia a contraindication to IV contrast?
No. Only Sickle Cell Anemia (per the boards)
Is it normal to scan a head CT with thinner slices from base of skull through frontal sinus and then thicker sections to the top of the head?
Yes, some places do this (like Penn).
Will a subdural hematoma follow the contour of the brain or the angle of the skull?
the contour of the brain so you will see it a little lobulated.
Will a epidural hematoma follow the contour of the brain or the angle of the skull?
the angle of the skull
Is it a good idea to give contrast to a pt with an ACUTE subdural hematoma?
No because it will mask the bright signal from the subdural
What has a higher HU number: congealed blood or fresh blood?
Congealed blood is higher
Petrous bone imaging in the head is generally acquired in high or low resolution?
high
What is a typical soft tissue WW and WL appropriate for a Soft Tissue Neck Exam?
250 W and 50 L
