CN VI: Abducens Nerve Flashcards
What type of axon?
General somatic efferent
What is the function of VI?
Lateral rectus muscle (ipsilateral)
Where does VI leave the brainstem?
Caudal pons
What happens with an injury to VI?
Affected eye deviates medially (medial strabismus)
What is the function of the MLF (medial longitudinal fasciculus)?
Allows coordination of head and eye movement
What does the MLF connect?
Nuclei of CN III, CN IV, and CN VI
What happens with an injury to the nucleus of VI?
Medial strabismus (eye leans medially)
Trouble gazing to the side of lesion with both eyes because no internuclear neurons for eye coordination
What happens with a lesion to the MLF?
Eyes cannot coordinate so could have one eye moving laterally while other cannot know to move medially
Scanning:
Horizontal: PPRF
Upward: MLF
Track impulse for scanning/tracking.
Frontal eye field -> PPRF -> CN VI an III
