CN 1: Olfactory Nerve Flashcards
What axon type is CN1?
Special sensory nerve
What is olfaction?
Conscious chemical sensation for taste and smell
What is a special characteristic of olfactory fila that make them prone to fracture?
They are thin so during trauma can be sheared by holes in cribriform plate
What are the cells that make up the olfactory tract? Where do they synapse with the receptors?
Mitral cells; in glomeruli just above the cribriform plate
What part of the olfactory tract regulates sensitivity to odors?
Anterior olfactory nucleus - send axons to olfactory bulb on other side as well
What are the three projections of the olfactory tract?
- Lateral Olfactory Stria
- pyriform area (processing of smell) - Intermediate stria
- no function in humans - Medial stria
- subcallosal region; emotional response to smell
When you smell apple pie and think thanksgiving, what part of the olfactory tract is being used?
Medial olfactory stria
When you’ve been in a room with a consistent odor, what part of the brain helps turn off that smell?
Anterior olfactory nucleus
T/F: The olfactory nerve goes through the thalamus?
FALSE
However, it can indirectly send information to the thalamus and many other parts of the brain
