CN II (Optic) Flashcards
What are in the retina at the back of the eyeball?
Specialized sensory neurons ( rods and cones)
Visual impulses are sent to the optic N via what?
Axons of ganglion cells of retina
The optic nerves meet where?
Optic Chiasm which lies above pituitary fossa
What cross over at the chiasm?
Impulses from nasal retina (temporal field of vision)
Damage to the optic chiasm will present with what?
Bitemporal hemianopia
Fibers from optic N synapse in the what?
Lateral geniculate body of thalamus
Fibers from thalamus continue as what?
Optic Radiation (geniculocalcarine tract) to primary visual cortex
Damage to optic radiation will present with what?
Homonymous hemianopia
Primary visual cortex is located where?
In occipital lobe on either side of calcarine fissure (brodmann area 17)
Damage to primary visual cortex will result in what?
Homonymous hemianopia with macular sparing
