Predisposing
Genetics, history, family, age, etc
Precipitating
Stressor/ triggers (major surgery) onset of severe medical disorder
Perpetuating
Controllable things. Events that can keep , an illness in motion. Examples are controllable, irregular sleep schedule, alcohol, caffeine
Electro convulsive therapy (ect)
Physiologic is priority - bringing them back. Breathing and reducing aspiration.
What medications for pre ECT
Atropine or glycopyrrolate can be given 30 min before ECT procedure.

Can both be used to minimize salary secretions during procedure to prevent aspirations
Propofol
Medication for ECT to help out them to sleep. Anesthetic.
Succinylcholine
Is the preferred muscle relaxant for ECT prevents jerking movement to decrease the risk of injury it also paralyzes respiratory muscles therefore they recur assistance w/ breathing
Procedural care for ECT
Continuous cardio monitoring is occurring throughout procedure. Hypertension control occurs right after procedure. Client receives 100% oxygen during and after. Clients are expected to become alert 15 min following
Post ECT
Memory loss and confusion can occur
Memory loss is retrograde leading up to the procedure.
Most clients do recover
nursing actions is to provide frequent orientation, provide a safe environment to prevent injury
What does ECT treat?
Major depressive disorder
Schizophrenia
Acute mania ( bipolar)
Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal
Abdominal cramping, vomiting
Tremors
Restless, inability to sleep
High HR, BP, RR, TEMP
Hallucinations or illusions
Tonic-clonic seizures
Alcohol withdrawal symptoms start
Within 4-12 hours
Can last 5-7 days
