CM - Site layout planning & waste management Flashcards
What constitutes construction waste?
Anything that arrives on site that we discard or intend to discard.
What is hazardous waste?
Wate that contains toxic or hazardous substances that may have an impact on health and the environment.
What is non-hazardous, non-inert waste?
Similar to household waste, and can be treated or stored in the same facilities.
Give some examples of inert waste:
Bricks, glass, concrete, stones.
Give some examples of hazardous waste:
Asbestos, hydrocarbons, inflammable liquids.
What percentage wate comes from the construction industry?
61 %
What sort of waste taxes have been implemented for the construction industry?
Landfill tax, and aggregates levy
What is the environmental legalisation involved with waste management?
Environmental permitting regulations, landfill directive and waste framework directive.
What is the order of the waste hierarchy
1 - Prevention / reduction
2 - Re-use
3 - Recycling
4 - Recovery
5 - Disposal
What is the recovery stage in waste management?
Energy recovery through incineration
What is the prevention stage in waste management?
Avoid over-ordering, and preventing spoilage.
What does a SWMP describe?
How waste will be managed on site.
What does a SWMP do?
Record any decisions made during the development, design, and construction stages of the project to minimise the quantity of waste produced on site.
Once construction starts, what must you do with waste?
1 - Determine types of waste
2 - Estimate waste volume
3 - Provide sorting units
4 - Provide training and site inductions
What is site layout planning?
Planning the organisation of land use, access to site, access across site and securit.
Why use site layout planning?
To improve effiency and productivity on site, safety and to decrease cost.
What factors should be considered in site layout planning?
- Accessibility
- Equipment location
- Security
- Accommodation
- Offices
- Wefare facilities
- Water supply
- Material handing/movement
What are the steps involved with developing a site layout plan?
1 - Identify facilities required
2 - Develop an accurate drawing of the site
3 - Locat access points
4 - Map the traffic routes
5 - Locate concrete discharge and crane positions
6 - Material storage areas
7 - Locate space for temporary facilities
