Cloud computing?
An internet based computing service (providing servers, storage, databases, networks, software) to connected computers on demand
Private cloud
(Used by banks)
The cloud is managed by an organization and serve it solely
Public cloud
Cloud infrastructure is owned and managed by a third party cloud service provider and can have many tenants
Community cloud
(Governments)
Managed by many organizations and supports a specific community (with the same interests)
Hybrid cloud
Cloud infrastructure is composed of two or more of the other types
SaaS
Software as a service.
- renting application software from a service provider rather than buying, and installing it.
- saves storage
- Examples Google Drive, slack, Microsoft 365
PaaS
Platform as a service:
Hardware and software tools available over the internet upon which applications can be developed and executed
Example: Windows Azure, Wix
IaaS
Infrastructure as a service
Offering computing resources on the Cloud,
- computing resources like storage, virtualisation, networks on demand
- often pay-as-you-go,
Examples: AWS EC2
Benefits of SaaS
- Increased accessibility
- Automatic updates
- Reliability and security
- Cost reduction
Benefits of IaaS
- easier to scale
- upgrade and maintenance are shouldered by the cloud service provider
