Clostridium Botulinum Flashcards
Difference between infant and adult?
Adult in in toxication while infant in infection (grows in the infant)
What are the two types of human toxins?
CbotA- proteolytic B/F
CbotE non proteolytic B/F
What sort of toxin does Cbot produce?
A/B toxin
- proteolytic bacteri produces protease
- non proteolytic host stomach acid
Hoes does BoNT act?
cleaves SNARE proteins so no ACTH is released (results in paralysis)
How to prevent Cbot?
boil canned goods
Get a pH down to 4.6 or high salt >5.5%
What are the four faces of C bot?
The four faces of Clostridium botulinum
Intoxication - ingestion or injection of the toxin
Infant Botulism- ingestion and intestinal proliferation of the organism
Wound botulism- deep wound results in anaerobic environment
Bioterrorism- deliberate delivery of toxin to large populations
How is Cb tx processed in the body?
Ingested→ gut→ spread via blood to peripheral nerves
BoNT acts as protease cleaving SNARE proteins
Deprives muscle of acetylcholine→ paralysis
What are the two tyeps of cb toxin?
A-B toxin, inactive after production
Proteolytic orNon-proteolytic Cb
Which groups affect humans for cb?
Human illness is generally caused by group 1 and group 2 Cb
Group 1: C bot A and proteolytic strains of B and F (human)
Group 2: C bot E and non-proteolytic strains of B and F (human)
Group 3: C bot C and D (animal)
Group 4: C bot G(animal)
Hwo do you do detection of clostridium bot?
3 tubse
- no treatments
- tube boiled in water for 10mins
- trypsin added to tube
Where is Cb toxin found in the environment
Cb is on one circular chromosomes
Found in soil, spores consumed regularly, out competed
Strict anaerobe, lack aa synthesis (hydrolytic enzymes)
