What was the aims of Williams et al?
To investigate the impact of a seven day internet delivered CBM-1 on negative thinking bias and depression
To investigate whether this intervention would improve the effectiveness of online CBT (iCBT).

Imagery-based cognitive bias modification.

Online CBT.
What were the methods of Williams et al?
Intervention group completed seven days of CBM-I. Then a 10 week iCBT course.
Ppts then asked to complete a questionnaire again.
What did the participants do before the procedure started in Williams et al?
Participants completed an online screening questionnaire and then an interview over the phone.
Baseline measures were taken off depressive symptoms for all ppts based off these questionnaires and interviews.
What does CBM-I involve?
Daily 20 minute sessions for a week where individuals are presented with scenarios which resolve in a positive manner. This trains the user to think more positively about events in their everyday lives. This is a bottom up approach.
What does iCBT involve?
6 online lessons of typical CBT but online including regular homework. Examines pre-existing negative thinking patterns and change them.
What were the results of CBM in Williams et al?
Following CBM the mean depression score went down 9 points compared to the wait list group with 3.
What were the results of iCBT in Williams et al?
The mean depression score dropped 18 points and the waitlist group dropped 7.5.
What were the conclusions of Williams et al?
Online CBM leads to a significant symptom reduction in just a week. iCBT was also a useful addition however a button up approach may be more effective.
