Clinical: CBT (Sz) Flashcards
What are the 4 things CBT focuses on when treating schizophrenia?
-Irrational thoughts
-Delusions
-Behavioural experiments
-Behavioural activation
How does CBT focus on irrational thoughts?
Helps clients identify irrational thoughts and try to cope with them.
Therapists build self awareness so patient can initiate coping strategies like meditation.
How does CBT focus on delusions?
Help give understanding to patients why they hallucinate so they can reduce stress by believing the voices aren’t real.
How does CBT focus on behavioural experiments?
Verbally challenging clients perceived reality by reality testing. Eg: asking for evidence of the patient believes someone is trying to harm them.
How does CBT focus on behavioural activation?
As schizophrenia is linked with social withdrawal. CBT attempts to reward positive behaviours like social activities.
What is different treatment to CBT?
Drug Therapy:
CBT may not work for extremely psychotic patients so drug treatments may be more effective.
What is the expense of CBT?
Expensive:
Time consuming and trained therapists are needed.
What is the supporting evidence of CBT?
Tarrier et al:
Found that after 3 months of CBT patients showed less symptoms.
What are the side effects of CBT?
No side effects.
What are the ethics of CBT?
Good ethics as it teaches patients coping mechanisms and teaches them that Sz doesn’t have to define them.
Evaluate the reason of CBT?
Patients have to be willing to share uncomfortable thoughts with a therapist and questioning thoughts can be scary and difficult.
It may be easier for some just to take a pill.
Evaluate the time of CBT.
CBT can be a lengthy process but effects are long lasting.
