Eg: a friend cancels on plans and they assume everyone hates them.

During childhood due to criticism and rejection from parents.

12,000 pregnant women, one with most negative beliefs were more likely to become depressed in the future.
These cognitions occurred before depression.

Reductionist:
Cannot explain all aspects of depression. Eg: hallucinations cannot be explained by the negative cognitive triad.
