Clinical Trials 3.8 Flashcards
Why are clinical trials used
To establish the vaccines/drugs safety and effectiveness
What are the three types of clinical trials
Randomised
Placebo Controlled
Double blind
What is randomised
Subjects are divided into groups in a randomised way
Such as age or gender
What is the reason for randomised
Reduces bias in the distribution of characteristics
What is double blind
Neither the subjects or the researchers know which group are receiving which drug
What are the two reasons for double blind
Reduces the chance of people being biased
Prevents biased interpretations
What are the two reasons for double blind
Reduces the chance of people being biased
Prevents biased interpretations
What is placebo controlled
One group of subjects receives the vaccine/drug and the second group receives a placebo control (fake drug)
What are two reasons for placebo controlled
Ensures valid comparisons
Gives us the effectiveness of the new drug
What are error bars
Error bars are used on graphs to shoe the spread of data around the mean value
What does it mean if error bars dont over lap
The difference in results are significant
What does it mean if error bars overlap
That the difference in results isnt significant
