Clinical Pathology - Proteins Lecture Flashcards
What is the difference between plasma proteins and serum proteins?
Plasma proteins include albulimn, globulins, fribrinogen, and clotting factors while serum proteins only contain albumin and globulins (NO fibrinogens)
what is fibrinogen?
- fibrongen is both a clotting factor and indicator of inflammation
- fiborngen is synthesized in the liver
- fibrongen is only measured in the plasma
Whats the difference between positive and negative acute phase proteins?
- Positive APPs:increase with inflammation
- ## Negative: decrease with inflamation
What are the two main contributors to hyperprotinemia?
- hypersalbuminemia and hyperglobulinemia
What is indicated by a polyclonal gammopathy?
Indicates clonal proliferation of plasma cells/lymphocytes
What is indicated by a monoclonal gammopathy?
idk.. fill in later
What is panhypoprotinemia?
A decrease in both albumiin and globulins
What are the three main causes of hypoalbuminemia?
1) loss 2) decreased production 3) hemodlution
what are the differential diagnoses for panhypoprotinemia?
1) Hemorrahge
2) PLE –> protein losing enteropathy
3) severe exudation/high protein effusion
4) hemodlution
5) intestinal parasitism
