Clinical Pathology --> Divalent cations Flashcards
1
Q
What are the different mineral functions associated with C, P, and Mg?
A
1) Nerve function
2) Bone matrix
3) Blood clotting
4) Cellular metabolism
5) Muscle
2
Q
What does PTH do and where does it come from?
A
- PTh comes from the parathyroid gland and it gets released in reesponse to hypocalcemia and decreased Vitamin D
- PTH has the following fucntions:
- 1) Increases calcium and phosphorses reabsorption from the bone
- 2) Decreased phosphorous reabsorption by the kidneys
- 3) Increases activity of vitamin D
- ## 4) Increases calcium absorption from the gut and distal renal tubules
3
Q
Whatr does PTH related protein do?
A
- Maintains calcium balance in the fetus but it is NOT normally active in adults
4
Q
What does calcitonin do?
A
produced by thyroid parafollicular cells in response to hypercalcemia
- it functions to decrease serum calcium and phosphorous
5
Q
What does vitamin D do? Whats another name for it?
A
- another name for it is calcitrol and this is the metabolically active form of vitamin D
- it functions to increase serum calciumn and phosphorous
6
Q
what is free ionized calcium?
A
- its the biologically actuive fomr of calciu, its hormone regulated
- its 50% of the total calcium
