What is hemoptysis?
Coughing up blood or bloody sputum that originates below the larynx
What is pseudohemoptysis?
Coughing up blood previously aspirated into the airways from the GI tract, nose, or supraglottic areas
What is dyspnea?
Awareness of breathlessness
What is orthopnea?
Breathlessness in the supine position
WHat is paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea?
Breathlessness while sleeping causing you to wake up
What is cyanosis?
Bluish discoloration of the skin and mucus membranes
When deoxy-Hb is greater than 5g/dL
What causes cherry red flush?
Carboxyhemoglobinemia (CO poisoning)
What is clubbing?
Enlargement of the distal segment of a digit
What are common respiratory causes of clubbing?
CF, bronchiectasis, benign mesothelioma, pulmonary fibrosis
What is hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy?
Clubbing, painful periosteal hypertrophy of long bones, and arthralgia of large joints
What is the most common cause of hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy?
Lung cancers
What causes Horner syndrome?
Pancoast tumor of the lung
Describe Horner syndrome?
Small pupil (miosis) Decreased sweating (anhydrosis) Drooping of upper eyelid (ptosis)
What are the two signs of hypercarbia?
Redness and swelling of cunjuctiva
