climate topic 3 Flashcards
1
Q
mitigation strategies
A
- efforts to reduce GHG emissions & enhance carbon sinks
- using clean energy sources
- forest regeneration
2
Q
adaptation strategies
A
- efforts to adjust to climate change; reduce harm to ppl, properties & env
- using tech in food production
- small adjustments: educating public to know how to respond to impacts of climate change
- large transformational changes: constructing large physical structures to reduce potential harm caused by impacts of CC
3
Q
short term events (cyclones & floods)
A
- brief & sudden, last for short duration of time (days to weeks)
- cause immediate climate risks, widespread destruction of properties, lobes & services
eg tropical cyclone Seroja, April 2021 - torrential rainfall brought by flash floods in timor leste & eastern indonesia
- 59 deaths, 823 damaged houses & 563 displaced ppl
4
Q
long term events ( sea level rise & droughts)
A
- long period of time to develop (several months or years)
- 2006 - 2015, sea level rise about 3.6mm
- slower events -> communities have ample time to prepare & adapt to impacts of these hazards
OR go unnoticed, locals unaware to implement any measures
eg drought in western USA, 2000s - 2 major reservoirs shrunk
- incr in forest fires over these 20 yrs
5
Q
[vulnerability]
A
