Climate Change Flashcards
Factors affecting climate change
- latitude
- elevation
- air masses over area
- areas near bodies of water
What is conduction
Transfer of thermal energy through direct contact between particles without moving them to new location (TOUCHING)
What is radiation
Emission of energy as waves. Substance higher then surrounding will emit radiant energy (infrared radiation) (NOT TOUCHING)
What is convection
Transfer of thermal energy through movement of particles from one location. to another (bathtub hot and cold), gasses and liquids (TOUCHING)
Layers of atmosphere
Troposphere (life and weather)
Stratosphere (ozone gas and little moisture)
Mesosphere (little gas and air pressure)
Thermosphere (absorbs x-rays and gamma, little gas, auras are)
Global warming potential
Measure of ability of gas to trap thermal energy in atmosphere over time
Persistence
Length of time gas in atmosphere
Coriolis Effect
Moving air to turn right in noters hemisphere and left in southern
Natural greenhouse effect
Trap thermal energy for life, water vapour contributes the most, solar radiation absorbed in earths surface and reemitted into atmosphere and thermal energy (absorbed by gas and clouds)
Anthropogenic greenhouse effect
Enhancement of natural greenhouse effect from humans, most significant gas is CO2 released from burning fossil fuels
Greenhouse gases
Greenhouse gases are gases in the earth’s atmosphere that trap heat.
Temperate coniferous
- lots of precipitation
- warm summers, wet winters
- located in canada vancouver
- includes tall coniferous trees, coyotes, bears, lynx
Temperate deciduous
- south of boreal
- eastern canada and central (us)
- deciduous trees
- many animals and plants
- MOST PRECIPITAION
- fast decomposition
- includes mice, deer, birds, wolves, trees
Boreal
- IN EVERY PROVINCE
- conifers
- south of tundra
- more perception then tundra
- acidic soil
- conifer needles
- birds eating seeds, squirrels, hare, deer, coniferous trees
What is climate change
long-term change in climate (average weather over period of time)
