Climate Change Flashcards
What does climate change mean?
The Earth’s average temperature is going up and affecting the climate
What do people say is the main cause of today’s warming?
Human activities like burning fossil fuels, which releases greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere
What is Carbon dioxide and what do people say has happened with it?
It is a major greenhouse gas, and people say it has increased by about 50% and is now at levels not seen for millions of years
What effects does the warming of the Earth have?
- Deserts are getting bigger
- Heatwaves and wildfires are more common
- Arctic ice is melting
What do higher temperatures lead to?
Stronger storms, droughts, and other extreme weather
What is a greenhouse gas?
Like a blanket around the Earth. It helps keep the planet warm by trapping heat from the sun, just like a blanket keeps you warm at night. But if there’s too much of this blanket, the Earth can get too hot, like if you had too many blankets on you
What is climate change doing to many species?
Many are struggling to survive as their habitats change
What 3 things will continue to happen to the ocean even if efforts to minimize future warming of the earth are successful?
- Ocean heating
- Ocean acidification
- Sea level rise
What does the World Health Organization call climate change?
One of the biggest threats to global health in the 21st century
Without action to limit the warming of the Earth, what will happen?
Societies and ecosystems will experience more severe risks
Who is the most affected by and least able to adapt to climate change?
Poorer communities, which contribute less to emissions
What will additional warming of the Earth do in Greenland?
Melt the Greenland ice sheet
What did the 2015 Paris Agreement aim to do?
Keep global warming “well under 2 °C”
What would limiting warming to 1.5 °C require?
Halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050
How can we reduce our use of fossil fuels?
By saving energy and using cleaner energy sources like wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear power
