What do clefs do
Show pitch of specific notes
5 clefs
Treble Bass Alto Tenor Treble octave
Treble
High pitch eg flute, violin, clarinet, trumpet, horn, oboe, women’s voice
Middle C is one line below bottom
Bass
Low pitch eg bassoon, trombone, tuba, cello, double bass, male voice
Middle C is one line above top
Alto
Viola only
Middle C is on middle line, with dip in clef
Clef centred within lines
Tenor
Bassoon, trombone, cello, sometimes male voice
Middle C is on second line, with dip in clef
Clef one line above bottom
All instruments that use tenor ALSO use bass clef
Treble octave
Male voice only
Middle C is in second space
All notes should be transposed down an octave
Looks like treble clef with a small 8 underneath
How to transpose between clefs
- Work out where the first note is in relation to middle C
- Pinpoint middle C in new clef
- Work out where first note should be in new clef
- Complete rest of notes
