What are cadences

A

A progression (sequence of chords) that happens at the end of a piece or phrase

How to suggest suitable chords

A
  1. Work out the key of the piece
  2. Write down the notes which make up the triads of I, II, IV and V
  3. The first note under each bracket must be part of the chord you choose
  4. Do the last chord of each cadence first, ending on I or V
  5. Make sure each progression has no repeated chords

Finding an Ic-V progression

A

Often found just before a perfect cadence
Ic is a tonic chord in second inversion, so the lowest note is the 5th of the triad
Va is a dominant chord in root position. In the key of major, the dominant is the lowest note
The lowest note is the same in both chords$
