Cleaning and Corrosion Vocab Flashcards
Galvanic Corrosion
When two dissimilar metals make electrical contact in the presence of an electrolyte
Fretting Corrosion
Corrosion between closely fitting assembled parts that have a slight amount of relative motion
Anodic
Metal most likely to corrode
Cathodic
Metal least likely to corrode
Oxidation
The process of an atom or ion losing electrons
Filiform Corrosion
Worm-like corrosion that occurs beneath paint film because of oxygen concentration on metal surfaces containing an organic coating system
Aromatic Naptha
A toxic material that attacks acrylics and and rubber products
Aliphatic Naptha
A material used to clean surfaces before painting, and clean acrylics and rubber
Surface Corrosion
The most common form of corrosion appearing as etching or pitting formed by either direct chemical or electrochemical attacks
Pitting Corrosion
A destructive and intense form of corrosion that leaves holes or pits in metals that produce a protective oxide film
