Classification/Taxonomy Flashcards
The orderly classification and grouping of organisms into taxa (categories)
Taxonomy
Taxonomy involved three structured, interrelated categories. What are they?
-classification/taxonomy
- nomenclature
- identification
Taxonomy is based on similarities and differences in ____.
Genotype and phenotype
Cellular type: Domain
Prokaryotes:
Archaeobacteria:
Eukaryotes:
- Bacteria
- Archaea
- Eukarya
Formal levels of bacterial classification (arrange in order)
Domain
Kingdom
Division (Phylum in kingdom Animalia)
Class
Order (not useful for bacteria)
Family
Tribe (not useful for bacteria)
Genus
Species
Subspecies
T or F
Archaea domain includes in unicellular prokaryotic organisms.
True
The bacterial family end always with
___.
-aceae
Family: clan
Genus:
Species:
-Last/family name
-first name
These two domains belong to prokaryotic organisms
Archaeobacteria and eubacteria
Domain of eukarya cab be ____.
- Simple multicells/ unicells
- Multicellular
In the eukaryotic domain, unicells belong to what kingdom?
A. Plantae
B. Archaeabacteria
C. Eubacteria
D. Protista
D
These parts of taxomy are not usually used for the classification of bacteria.
Order and Tribes
Proper word for the name of a species is an ___.
Epithet
Staphylococcus aureus
Micrococcaceae
(Identify the genus, species epithet, and family)
Genus: Staphylococcus
Species: aureus
Family: Micrococcaceae
Explain the concept about the different strains of species of the same genus.
The strain of bacteria is more specific. Example S. aureus is isolated from one patient and is resistant to penicillin and another S. aureus is susceptible to penicillin. The two isolated bacteria is considered as 2 DIFFERENT strains of the same species.
