Classification of Skills Flashcards
1
Q
define motor skill
A
- action or task that has a goal and that requires voluntary body/limb movement to achieve the goal
- learned rather than being innate
- e.g. passing in football
2
Q
name all the continuums used to classify skills
A
simple - complex
open - closed
gross - fine
self paced - externally paced
discrete - serial - continuous
low organisation - high organisation
3
Q
characteristics of a simple skill
A
- little info to process
- few decisions to make
- small number of sub routines
- e.g. sprint start in 100m
4
Q
characteristics of a complex skill
A
- performer needs to concentrate
- high degree of cognitive development
- high perceptual load leading to many decisions
- many sub routines
- e.g. trampolining routine
5
Q
characteristics of a open skill
A
- affected by environment, usually unpredictable
- interpreted and adapted differently each time
- e.g. receiving a pass in football
6
Q
characteristics of a closed skill
A
- not affected by environment
- performed the same way each time
- habitual and pre-determined
- e.g. free throws
7
Q
characteristics of a self-paced skill
A
- controlled by the performer
- they determine the speed and rate of the skill (usually closed)
- e.g. discus throw
8
Q
characteristics of a externally paced skill
A
- environment controls the pace
- skill performed in response to outside influence
- externally paced skills are open
- e.g. receiving a pass in netball
9
Q
characteristics of a gross skill
A
- involves large muscle movements
- associated w power/ strength/ endurance
- e.g. hammer throw
10
Q
characteristics of a fine skill
A
- intricate movements using small muscle groups
- associated w/ the control, accuracy, speed, or duration of a skill
- e.g. darts, archery, snooker
11
Q
characteristics of a discrete skill
A
- clear and definite beginnings and ends
- must start again to repeat it
- e.g. penalty in football
12
Q
characteristics of a serial skill
A
- number of discrete skills put together
- form a whole action
- usually have a set order in which they’re performed
- e.g. triple jump
13
Q
characteristics of a continuous skill
A
- don’t have a clear start or finish
- end of one cycle beginning of next
- movement repeated to be meaningful
- e.g. running cycling
14
Q
characteristics of a low organisation skill
A
- made up of sub routines
- easily separated and practiced by themselves
- e.g. swimming strokes (arms and legs)
15
Q
characteristics of a high organisation skill
A
- cannot be easily broken down into smaller parts
- would generally be taught as a whole skill
- e.g. cartwheel
