  • refers to poverty and lack of material necessities such as inadequate housing and income. It’s a major cause of WC underachievement in education.

Material deprivation - Housing

A
  • Overcrowded housing means less room for educational learning and disturbed sleep from loudness or sharing of rooms leading to disruptions so harder to do work and shorter attention spans in class also leads to less work.
  • Poor housing such as cold/damp conditions can cause ill health and families in temporary house holds more likely to suffer from illnesses -> more absences in school

A
  • Howard notes children from poorer homes have poorer diets with less intakes of energy and vitamins leading to weaker health creating illnesses -> increasing absences in school and difficult concentrating
  • Wilkinson argues WC children have higher risk of anxiety and bad behaviour if in a lower social class.

Material deprivation - Financial support and the costs of education

A

WC families likely to lack financial support for children -> children miss out on equipment or experience that enhance learning

  • WC children might use second hand equipment of poorer quality which could result in being isolated, bullied by peers
  • Less likely to go to university and further education over lack of funds and fear of debt
