Housing
poor housing and overcrowding can affect achievement. May mean no place to study, disturbed sleep. for some, may lead to ill health- to more absence from school
Howard: diet and health
people from poorer homes- lower intake of vitamins and energy- trouble concentrating or absences
Wilkinson: diet and health
lower the class- higher the rate of hyperactivity and conduct disorders
Machin and Blanden: diet and health
w/c families more likely to externalise behaviour e.g. fighting at school
Bull: financial support
poor families- less equipment and miss out on educational activities
Tanner: financial support
cost of resources and things like travel is a burden on poor families
Flaherty: financial support
fear of stigmatisation (entitled students do not take up FSM)
Ridge: financial support
w/c more likely to get jobs that would effect schoolwork
Calendar and Jackson: fear of debt
w/c would rather miss out on uni than get in debt
Reay: fear of debt
w/c more likely to go local Uni’s- save on travel. Also more likely to work P.T
