Importance of advocacy?
Social justice advocacy is an expectation to all nurses, in our professional code. Domain 4 of CASN. Nurses are in a unique position with their client.
Advocacy comm. strategies (3)?
Message development (The Ask) - the rule of 3:
1- High level, framing message that express core values
2- The essential message about the issue or situation
3- Action - “What it means for people” message.

Advocacy communication steps?
1- Goal-setting (what)?
2- Who is your audience (who)? who can make the change happen (decision-makers or influencers)?
3- Where is your audience on your issue and what does the audience care about (where and what)?
Community Development (CD) def?
A process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solution to common problems.
CD values?
- social justice/equity
- democratic
- non-authoritarian
- Community ownership
- Enhance natural capacities
- Upstream
Ontario Healthy communities coalition’s 10 steps? + practical steps
- Learn about com.: read, attend events
- Listen to members: key people, informal chat, identify leaders
- Bring people together: Gathering with food
- Assess community assets, resources, need, issues
- Help com. members to recognize area of concerns and their cause
- Establish vehicle for change
- Develop action plan
- Implement: fundraising, mobilize partners
- Evaluate results: research

TB crisis? CD practice in health issues.
- Strong link with SDOH: overcrowd house, smoking, food insecurity. Work on those with the community
