class 3 research - Tuhiwai Smith Flashcards
some definitions of science
western: observed facts and general laws about truth (oxford)
tranditional: relkationship between humans, plants, natural-forces, spirits. (indigenous)
Tuhiwai Smith’s book is divided into two parts. What are these two parts?
first part of the book: western research and crituqing it
second part: setting new agenda for indigenous research
who talked about “research through imperial eyes”. what is it
Tuhiwai Smith’s book makes it clear that research through “imperial eyes” is not just something for the history books.
Western research is encoded in imperial and colonial discourses that influence the gaze of the researcher.
what is colonializm?
“control by one power over a dependent area or people.”
what is imperiealizm?
Imperialism is the state practice extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other territories and peoples.
Why does Tuhiwai Smith reject the term “post colonializm”?
She rejects the term “post-colonialism” as it implies that colonialism is finished business and argues that colonialism continues to have a profound impact on indigenous peoples.
Researchers often believe that they are doing research “for the greater good of mankind”. Why
does Linda Tuhiwai Smith think that this is a problem when researchers use that for their work with
other communities
n example would be research conducted
focusing on Indigenous people using western approaches. Indigenous peoples’ perspectives are
completely overlooked. So, what kind of “good” will this lead to for the indigenous people?
-Research methodology is not a one-size-fits-all approach
Why does Tuhiwai Smith suggest that it is difficult to discuss (Western) research methodology and Indigenous Peoples together without considering imperialism?
Because the colonizers believed their worldview and
reality to be the absolute truth. is why it’s more difficult for Indigenous people to talk about
western science without taking imperialism into account
What does Tuhiwai Smith suggest is the “alternative story” or “counter-story” of how Indigenous
peoples perceive Western research?
ndigenous people think that when doing research, the
western framework should take into account their interests rather than using a western approach and
expecting the outcomes to conform to western realities and ideas. Rather than focusing only on one objective truth, researchers should be open to discovering new things and mindful of the subjective aspect of their work.
