generic name
given by the manufacturer that first develops the medication. the proper name of the drug ingredient.
trade name
the name assigned by the company marketing the drug
controlled drugs and substances act
legislation that regulates controlled substances such as narcotics. prescribers have to follow standards of practice and legislation to prescribe these drugs. controls the import, production, export, distribution, and possession of these substances.

- plants (foxgloves, poppies)
- animals (insulin from pigs, horse urine for menopausal women)
- minerals (lithium, sodium)
- synthetics (didnt occur naturally, made in a lab)
