Clash of civilisations Flashcards
Why is there a clash of civilisation?
Civilisations are incompatible
Western foreign policy
Sexuality
Ao1 civilisations are incompatible
Huntington argues, there is now a major clash of civilisation
This is because in today’s globalised world,, religious differences have become the major source of identity
And globalisation has made contact between civilisations easier and more frequent, increasing the chance of conflicts remerging
He believes that the west is under threat, especially from Islam and that there is growing conflict between the west vs the rest
And he argues for the west to reassert its Christian identity
Ao3 clash of civilisation
Jackson criticises, Huntington for stereotyping eastern people especially Muslims as untrustworthy, inferior and justifies human rights abuses by the west
And at the clash is a misleading ideology that portrays the whole of Islam as an enemy. When in reality, it’s only a minority
Ao1 western foreign policy
Armstrong argues, that hostility from the west does not stem from fundamentalist Islam as Huntington suggest, but is a reaction to Western foreign policy in the Middle East
An example of this is Iran, where the British Americans backed the Shah of Iran, and they mutually depended on each other for resources and support
The shah was a ruthless dictator whom ordered a massacre in 1978, where 900 people were murdered
She argues that I’ve asked majority of fundamentalist do not partake in acts of violence, and therefore the threat stems from western foreign policy not religion itself
Ao3 western foreign policy
Huntington would defend do US foreign policy as necessary to protect western interest in the face of potential harms
Ao1 sexuality
Norris and Inglehart argue that issue that divides the rest , and the Muslim world is not democracy but sexuality as support for democracy is high in both
There are great differences in values on relationships, abortion, gay rights and divorce
There is no global consensus, and these divergent values cause the real clash of civilisations between Muslim society and west
Ao3 sexuality
Western and Islamic views could now be blurring on sexuality for example, gay friendly mosques in Paris
And new Christian right hold the same views on sexuality as Islam and they are western
