- Describes language functions; focussing more on categorising individual utterances.
- Answering: Responding to an utterance of another speaker.
- Calling: Getting someone’s attention
- Greeting: Greeting someone
- Labelling: Naming a person, object or thing
- Practicising: Using language when no adult is present.
- Protesting: Objecting to requests from others
- Repeating: Repeating an adult word or utterance.
- Requesting action: Asking for something to be done for them.

Functions of speech

- Instrumental: to fufill a need e.g. “Want juice”
- Regulatory:to influence the behaviour of others. “Put down.”
- Interactional: to build and strengthen social relationships. e.g. “Love you.”
- Personal: Conveying opinions, ideas and identity. E.g. “me love Peppa Pig.”
- Representational: Facts and information. E.g. “it hot.”
- Imaginative: Creation of an imagined concept. E.g. “me princess you prince.”
- Heuristic: To learn about their environment. E.g. “What’s that?”
