Holophrastic Stage
A
- The child conveys a whole sentence worth of meaning in just a single word or labels things in the environment around them.
- It is different from a child’s babble

- A single word which expresses a whole idea.
- Can be declaritive, exclamative, interrogative or imperative.

The number of nouns exceeds the number of other word classes in the child’s early vocabulary.

- When a word is used more broadly to describe things with similar properties as well as the specific item to which the word actually applies.
- e.g. rats, squirrels and rabbits = Mice. Any round fruit may be an ‘Apple,’

A
- When a word is used in a limited way which does not recognise it’s full meaning.
- e.g. knowing the word banana for a physical one but not for a bunch of bananas or a picture of a banana.)

- Describes a broad term, for example cutlery, or dog.

A
- A more specialised and specific word.
- For example: Spoon would be a hyponym of cutlery and labrador would be a hyponym of dog.

A
- Compressing a string of words into a single utterance as the child has not been able to segment the lexis.
- e.g. ‘what’s that? = ‘wassat?’
- It is argued that these are constructions whoch the child is using as units of language.

- This is a skill which is gradually acquired.
