CLA Cognitivism Flashcards
1
Q
Piaget
A
- Stated that children need to develop certain mental abilities before they can acquire particular aspects of language, therefore cannot be taught before they are ready.
- Until the age of 18 Months children are egocentric and are start notice that the environment around them has object permance.
- Piaget proposed 4 development stages:
- Sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational, formal operational.
- Criticism: People with learning difficulties are still linguistically fluent. Therefore, language and cognitive development cannot be too closely linked.

Q
Lewis and Ramsay (2004)
A
- Found that pronoun development during a child’s second year will be entirely dependent on the extent of the child’s sense if identity and ability to recognise the notion of self, particularly within the context of imaginative play.

Q
Criticism of Piaget’s egocentricity.
Repacholi and Gopnik (1997)
A
- Broccoli and crackers were offered to infants aged between 14-18 months who prefered crackers.
- When offering a snack to the researcher: 14-month-old: would offer the cracker, irrespective of whether the researcher expressed and interest for crackers or broccoli. 18-month-old: was able to identify the researcher had indicated a preference for broccoli and offered them it.
- Suggestes that children, even from a very young age are sensitive to the needs and desires others; demonstrating that children are not egocentric in their behaviour.

Q
Vygotsky
MKO,ZPD
A
- Believed that sociocultural environment plays an important role in how children develop cognitively.
- Believed that when they learn that talking out loud is considered anti-social or eccentric, their intrapersonal speech becomes the ‘silent inner speech’ that adults use to think with.
- Suggested that for children to learn, they need an MKO who supports the child in moving beyond their ZPD, encouraging them to move beyond what they already know to what is not yet known by the means of scaffolding and support.
