Q

Popular sovereignty, how is it relevant during this time, what popular senator was a fan of this idea

A

Popular sovereignty was when the people got to decide whether or not they wanted to be a free state or a slave state. This is relevant because both the slave states and the free states were requiring that everything was fair and that there was an equal amount of slave states as there were free states. So popular sovereignty allowed the citizens to feel like they had a say based on their needs. Senator Stephen Douglas

Q

Advantages and disadvantages for both the Union and the Confederacy

A

The Union due to their manufacturing economy could mass produce weapons and supplies easily this was to their advantage. The Confederate states due to their agricultural economy had to rely on trade for supplies; this was to their disadvantage because they had less supplies. The Confederacy also had less men willing to fight for them while the Union had plenty. Both sides had mainly young, untrained men who had never fought before. The Union had unskilled commanders that struggled to win battles while the Confederacy had skilled, strategic commanders that were good at maneuvering their forces.
