A

The Supreme Court ruled that he was not a citizen and he didn’t even have the right to sue anyway. He wasn’t free and no African Americans could ever be free. If you were a black person that escaped you could be captured and put on trial.

How did Lincoln only win with only 40 percent of the vote?

A

The south was split into 3 different opinions. Even though they all agreed in the same thing, they still were split into 3 which made Lincoln have more votes even though all of the south had more votes all together.

Fugitive Slave Law

A
  1. Set Into law in exchange for allowing CA to join the union as a anti-slave state, this law required northerners to return slaves that had ran away from slave owners.
  2. Threatened to arrest northerners who would not return slaves
  3. Allowed “suspected” slaves to be hauled in front of a judge. Many free blacks were put back into slavery
  4. Judge given $5 for letting slave free and $10 for deciding if they were free.
