How did the Supreme Court rule:
What did the decision say about slaves that escaped to free states:
The Supreme Court ruled that he was not a citizen and he didn’t even have the right to sue anyway. He wasn’t free and no African Americans could ever be free. If you were a black person that escaped you could be captured and put on trial.

How did Lincoln only win with only 40 percent of the vote?
The south was split into 3 different opinions. Even though they all agreed in the same thing, they still were split into 3 which made Lincoln have more votes even though all of the south had more votes all together.

Fugitive Slave Law
- Set Into law in exchange for allowing CA to join the union as a anti-slave state, this law required northerners to return slaves that had ran away from slave owners.
- Threatened to arrest northerners who would not return slaves
- Allowed “suspected” slaves to be hauled in front of a judge. Many free blacks were put back into slavery
- Judge given $5 for letting slave free and $10 for deciding if they were free.

Why didn’t West Virginia secede?
They did not want to break away from the union
What is a border state
A border state is a state that does not want to abolish slavery, but does not want to break away from the union.
What is fort Sumter and where is it
Fort Sumter is a fort in South Carolina. It is a union fort and the south thinks that since it is in South Carolina, the get to keep it.
Why did the south attack fort Sumter
The south thought since fort Sumter was in South Carolina, they got to keep it. They attacked it and trapped the northerners in it.

It mean freedom order.
Why did Lincoln wait until after the battle of Antietam to make this speach
He needed a big win so It would not look like he was desperate
Who did the Proclimation free and who did it not free.
It freed the slaved in the confederation and it did not free the border states. He did this because he needed the border states and did not want them to leave the union.
