citric acid cycle (4) Flashcards
where does the citric acid cycle occur in the cell? oxidative phosphorylation?
both in the mitochondria matrix
about how many ATP does CAC provide? oxidative phosphorlation?
CAC- 2 ATP
ox phos- 32
what membrane of the mitochrondira forms the cristae?
the inner membrane
where are the enzymes for the CAC?
in the fluid of the matrix space
where are the enzymes for oxidative phosphorylation?
embedded in the inner membrane
list the 3 functions of the citric acid cycle
- convert a number of diff fuels to a common mobile fuel (NADH)
- serves as a final meeting place of nearly all oxidizable substrates
- provides intermediates for biosynthesis
list 3 organs that mitochondria are most abundant in
- heart
- kidney
- liver
how does NADH get into the mitochondria?
it does’t! there is a population outside the cell and a population inside the cell and they do not mix so there is no transport machinery for it
what are the 3 enzymes involved in the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex?
- pyruvate dehydrogenase
- dihydrolipoyl transacetylase
- dihyrolipoyl dehydrogenase
what is the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex?
the connection between glycolysis and citric acid cylce
what type of reaction does pyruvate dehydrogenase (E1) do? what prosthetic is associated with it?
a condenstaion/decarboxylation
TPP group
what type of reaction does dihydrolipoyl transacetylase (E2) do? what prosthetic group is associated with it?
oxidative transfer and transacetylation
lipoaminde prosthetic group
what type of reaction does dihydrolipoyl dehydrogenase (E3) do? what prosthetic group is associated with it?
dehydrogenation reaction
FAD prosthetic group
what is the enzyme for the 1st step of the citric acid cycle?
citric synthase
what are the products of the 1st step in the CAC?
citrate and H2O
