what is cirrhosis?
an chronic progressive disease of liver characterized by diffuse degeneration and destruction of hepatocytes
what are common complications of cirrhosis ? (5)
portal hypertension
ascites
esophageal varices
jaundice
heptorenal syndrome
what is portal hypertension?
a persistent increase in pressure in the portal vein that develops as a result of obstruction to flow
what is ascites ?
accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity that results from venous congestion of the hepatic capillaries
what is esophageal varies?
faring, thin veins that can become visible and rupture - medical emergency
what is jaundice?
the bile not being able to leave the liver going into the bloodstream, causing the patient to be yellow
what is hepatorenal syndrome?
progressive renal failure is associated with hepatic failure
what are some interventions we can do to help aid patients with cirrhosis ?
restrict sodium
remove fluid through procedure( paracentesis )
diuretics
monitor for that factor hepaticas - fruity smell
- avoid alcohol
- avoid Tylenol
