Circulatory systmem Flashcards
To understand and define parts of the circulatory syste,
What is the function of circulating blood?
Circulate blood to the body.
What is the function of transporting nutrients?
Transport oxygen, water, and nutrients to cells in the blood.
What is the function of transporting waste?
Transport CO₂ and wastes away from the cells.
What is the function of maintaining temperature?
Maintains body temperature.
What is the function of fighting infections?
White blood cells fight infections.
What is the heart?
A muscular pump that contracts continuously to drive blood through blood vessels.
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four: Left atrium, right atrium, left ventricle, right ventricle.
Which side of the heart is oxygenated?
Left side.
Which side of the heart is deoxygenated?
Right side.
What is the aorta?
The main artery supplying oxygenated blood to the body.
What is the function of the pulmonary artery?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.
What is the function of the pulmonary vein?
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
What is the function of the superior vena cava?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the upper body to the right atrium.
What is the function of the inferior vena cava?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the right atrium.
What is the function of the right atrium?
Receives deoxygenated blood from the vena cava and sends it to the right ventricle.
What is the function of the left atrium?
Receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein and sends it to the left ventricle.
What is the function of the right ventricle?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery.
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Pumps oxygenated blood to the body via the aorta.
What is the function of the semilunar valves?
Prevent backflow from the arteries into the ventricles.
What is the function of the tricuspid valve?
Prevents backflow between the right atrium and right ventricle.
What is the function of the bicuspid valve?
Prevents backflow between the left atrium and left ventricle.
What is the function of blood vessels?
Carry blood from the heart to the body and back to the heart.
What is the function of arteries?
Carry blood away from the heart and create a pulse.
What is the function of veins?
Carry blood toward the heart and prevent backflow.
What is the function of capillaries?
Allow oxygen exchange to tissues and remove CO₂.
What are the functions of blood
Transport nutrients and waste (CO2), Regulate body temperature (absorb heat), Protection of the body (white blood cells).
Structure of blood
55% plasma (watery), 1% WBC (infections), 45% RBC (carry oxy and remove CO2)
Pulmonary
Carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and back again.
Syntenic
Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to all parts of the body.
Heart Rate
The number of times the heart beats in 60seconds
Stroke volume
The amount of blood pumped around by the heart in 1 beat.
Blood pressure
The amount of pressure on the walls of the arteries.
Systolic blood pressure
The pressure in the walls of the arteries during contraction.
Diastolic Blood pressure
Pressure in the walls of the arteries during relaxation.
