Circulatory System Quiz Flashcards
Aorta
Main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body. Leaves through the Aortic valve.
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart, thick walls, branch into smaller arterioles.
Veins
Carry blood towards the heart, low pressure, not as thick, valves prevent back-flow, branch into smaller venules.
Pulse
The arterial palpitation of a heartbeat. 75-80 BPM.
Plasma
Protein rich liquid that carries blood cells, 1/2 of blood volume.
Ventricles
Lower chambers of the heart, collect and expel blood received from an atrium towards the body and lungs. Right pumps deoxygenated blood into the lungs, left pumps oxygenated blood into the bloodstream.
Atria
Upper chambers of the heart which receive blood. Right receives deoxygenated blood from body and pumps it into the right ventricle, left receives oxygenated blood from the lungs, and pumps it into the left ventricle.
Hemoglobin
Transports oxygen from the lungs to all body tissue. Makes red blood cells appear red.
Red blood cells
Make up 1/2 of blood volume. Uses hemoglobin to transport oxygen to blood tissue. Disc shaped and made in bone marrow. High RBC causes blood clots while a low amount causes anemia.
White Blood Cells
Infection-fighting cells that recognize and destroy bacteria and viruses. Are the only blood cell with a nucleus and are less than 1% blood volume.
Platelets
Tiny cells that help with blood clotting to heal wounds. Less than 1% blood volume.
Systolic pressure
Peak allowed pressure in the arteries. Normal pressure is 120 over 80.
Diastolic Pressure
Minimum pressure in the arteries. Normal pressure is 120 over 80.
Capillaries
Link arteries and veins together, thin walls allow substances to diffuse from the blood to surrounding tissue.
