Chapter 12 Quiz Flashcards
Total internal reflection
occurs when light is travelling slow to fast, and when the angle of incidence is large enough that no refraction occurs in the second medium. Instead, the ray reflected back into the first medium.
Diamond
The “sparkling” of a diamond is due to the cut of the diamond faces, which combined with the high index of refraction, results in the total internal reflection of light
A high refractive index means that diamonds have a very small critical angle. A light ray can bounce around several times inside the diamond before exiting through the top face of the stone.
Critical Angle
The angle of incidence that produces an angle of refraction of 90º from the normal and is symbolized by ∠c. If you increase the angle of incidence past the critical angle, the refracted ray will no longer exit the medium. Instead, it will reflect back onto the medium.
Medium to Medium light speeds
When light travels from a high speed to a lower speed, the refracted ray bends towards the normal (F.A.S.T). When light travels through a medium of a higher (low to high) speed, the refracted ray bends away from the normal (S.O.F.A)
Mirrage
Caused by refraction of light in unevenly heated air - hot air is less dense than cooler air, so light will travel along curved path. Because the air is moving, the direction and the amount of bending are constantly changing.
Apparent Depth
Depth of an object that is placed in a medium with a larger density seen from a medium with a smaller density. Caused by refraction of the light where rays of light are being bent due to the change of speed while entering the mediums with different densities.
Rainbows
refracts, reflects, refracts light when going through the rain drops
sundogs
bright spots that appear on both sides of the sun and occur when ice crystals In the atomospeher refract lights of the sun low in the horizon.
temperature inversions
wind brings warm air over a very cold ocean and light from an object starts to travel upwards, making it appear in the air. sometimes looks upside down.
refraction
Is a property of light in which the speed and direction of light change. Speed and direction change because of changes in materials with different refractive indices.
The angle of refraction
The angle between the normal and a refracted ray.
