Circulation Flashcards
Needs for the Special Transport System?
Nutrients and oxygen, liquid medium for diffusion, removal of waste products.
3 Components of circulatory system?
Circulatory fluid, interconnecting vessels, muscular pump.
In an open circulatory system, what bathes cells and organs?
hemolymph
In closed circulatory system, what fluid is used?
Blood is confined In the vessels.
Where do arteries carry blood?
From heart to the capillaries
What are capillary beds for?
Sites to exchange blood and intracellular fluid.
Where do venules carry blood
They converge into veins and carry blood from capillaries to heart.
What type of heart is in a single circulation system?
Two chambered heart with one atrium and one ventricle.
Where does blood flow from in a single circulation system?
Leaves the heart and passes through two capillary beds before returning
What type of heart does a double circulation system have in amphibians and reptiles?
A three chambered heart with two atria and one ventricle
Where does oxygen poor blood flow in double circulation system?
Through a pulmocutaneous circuit to pick up oxygen through lungs and skin
What type of heart is in a double circulation system for mammals?
A four chambered heart. Left side only pumps and receives oxygen rich blood. Right side pumps and receives oxygen poor blood.
Function of atria and ventricles in human heart?
Atrium has thin walls and serves for blood returning to the heart. The ventricle has thicker walls for more forceful pumping.
What do the right atrium and ventricle pump?
Atrium receives deoxygenated blood from body (Systemic circulation) and right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs via pulmonary artery (Pulmonary circulation)
What do the left atrium and ventricle pump?
Atrium receives oxygenated blood from lungs via pulmonary veins. Ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Where is the tricuspid valve?
Right atrium and right ventricle
Where is the mitral (bicuspid) valve?
Left atrium and left ventricle
Where is the aortic valve?
Left ventricle and aorta
Where is the pulmonary valve?
Right ventricle and pulmonary trunk
What does the vena cava do?
It is a vein that carries blood from the lower body to the right atrium.
